Quit Smoking Support

Smoking and Healthy Lifestyle

Smoking remains one of the major risk-factors to Koori health, and Mallee District Aboriginal Services has a range of programs to tackle smoking and support people to reduce or quit.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show about 45 percent of Aboriginal Australians are daily smokers – more than twice the rate in the general community.

As well as counselling and medical support, we are working hard to change attitudes in our community.

One of our main aims is to develop networks to build community support for health promotion activities, smoking prevention and smoking cessation outcomes.

We have produced a series of television advertisements targetting smoking, and these are being broadcast nationally on NITV as well as local television networks.

Getting people to give up smoking is  a key step to improving health outcomes for Koori people, because smoking causes so many of the health problems in our community.
