Out of Home Care

When Koori children and young people in Mildura, Swan Hill and Kerang are no longer able to be cared for by their family, Mallee District Aboriginal Services co-ordinates services and supports in an effort to provide the best outcome.

Out of Home Care Program

Mallee District Aboriginal Services provides placement and support to Aboriginal children and young people needing care. Referrals come from the Department of Human Services and we work to match carers to the child or young person requiring care.

Mallee District Aboriginal Services also has a foster care program to assess and provide training to potential foster carers.

Carers receive competency and approval in the step by step assessment tool and receive 'Our Carers for Our Kids' training to be skilled in the caring of Aboriginal children or young people. Mallee District Aboriginal Services provides approved foster carers with ongoing training and support.

Aboriginal Kinship Carers, children and young people are referred to Mallee District Aboriginal Services  for case contracting by the Department of Human Services. Mallee District Aboriginal Services provides support to carers and young people and ensures Aboriginal children and young people in Kinship placements receive ongoing support whilst in placement with their family. Carers are provided with support and ongoing training to help provide the best possible outcomes for themselves and Kinship children or young people they care for.

Aboriginal Residential Unit

The Aboriginal Residential Unit is an out of home care placement option providing temporary, short-term or long term accommodation and support to children and young people who have been removed from their family home.
