NAIDOC Celebrations - Get involved!

The Mallee community is being invited to join in celebrations for NAIDOC Week 2018.

Celebrations start with a community Corroboree at Mildura on the Mildura riverfront on Sunday and an official launch at MDAS Swan Hill, followed by flag-raising ceremonies at Mildura, Swan Hill and Kerang on Monday morning.
NAIDOC 2018 is celebrating the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made – and continue to make - to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation.
MDAS Community Engagement Officer Simone Spencer said she was hoping a broad cross-section of the community would come along to the flag-raising, march and community celebration on Monday.
“Our women have always, and still do, play active and important roles in our community, local, state and national levels,” Ms Spencer said.
“They’re strong in their families and communities and it’s exciting that this year’s NAIDOC theme gives us the opportunity to recognise that important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played,” she said.
For at least 65,000 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have carried dreaming stories, songlines, languages and knowledge.
Ms Spencer said women play a pivotal role in keeping Aboriginal culture strong and maintaining it us as the oldest continuing culture on the planet.
“They are our mothers, our elders, our grandmothers, our aunties, our sisters and our daughters, but often their role has been invisible,” Ms Spencer said.
“NAIDOC is a great opportunity to bring our whole community together and recognise how important our traditions are and what an important part Aboriginal culture plays in what Australia is and can be,” she said.
Everyone is welcome to join in all of the official NAIDOC activities. Full details are on the events page at the MDAS website.
